9 mai 1999… aveam 11 ani, era o zi frumoasă de
primăvară. Mama m-a luat de mână şi am mers împreună la Piaţa Unirii, unde urma
să aibă loc slujba ţinută de Patriarhul României, avându-l alături pe Papa Ioan
Paul al II-lea, aflat în prima sa vizită într-o ţară majoritar ortodoxă. Nu îmi
aduc aminte prea multe din acea zi, dar simt în suflet bucuria întâlnirii cu un
om deosebit, pentru care sunt recunoscătoare. A fost singura dată când l-am
văzut “live”, prima mea vizită în Roma şi deci Vatican având loc abia în 2007
(chiar de ziua mea, dar asta este altă poveste). Am fost “alături”, din faţa
televizorului, de cei adunaţi în Piaţa San Pietro în primăvara lui 2005, pentru
a se ruga pentru el şi am fost din nou impresionată de iubirea cu care era
înconjurat şi care nu avea cum să fie decât un răspuns la iubirea pe care o
oferea el. De atunci am văzut filmări, documentare, filme şi am citit cărţi şi
articole (chiar acum citesc biografia sa, Witness to Hope, scrisă de George
Weigel) şi cu cât aflu mai multe despre el, sunt tot mai convinsă de faptul că
a fost un om deosebit, depăşind graniţele confesiunii şi religiei sale.
Deşi nu sunt catolică, mă bucură nespus faptul
că duminica aceasta, 27 aprilie, Papa Ioan Paul al II-lea va fi canonizat. Aş fi
vrut să mă aflu şi eu în Piaţa San Pietro, printre numeroşii pelerini din toată
lumea, cu siguranţă nu doar catolici. Nu s-a putut însă, dar voi urmări tot ce
se întâmplă acolo la televizor. În plus, am hotărât ca săptămâna aceasta să
încerc câteva dulciuri poloneze, printre care şi kremówka papieska (kreh-MOOV-kah
pah-PYESS-kah), despre care
se ştie că era prăjitura preferată a fostului papă. Aşa voi putea face şi
comparaţia cu originalele din Polonia, destinaţia mea viitoare de vacanţă.
Aseară am pregătit Sernik, un cheesecake
polonez, din care abia aştept să gust. Pentru restul aştept weekend-ul. Am să
împărtăşesc cu voi reţetele şi impresii!

Non abbiate paura di accogliere Cristo e di accettare la sua potestà!
Aiutate il Papa e tutti quanti vogliono servire Cristo e, con la potestà di Cristo, servire l’uomo e l’umanità intera!
Non abbiate paura! Aprite, anzi, spalancate le porte a Cristo!
Alla sua salvatrice potestà aprite i confini degli Stati, i sistemi economici come quelli politici, i vasti campi di cultura, di civiltà, di sviluppo. Non abbiate paura! Cristo sa “cosa è dentro l’uomo”. Solo lui lo sa!

May 9th 1999…
I was 11 years old and it was a beautiful day of spring. My mother and I went
to Unirii Square, where it was to be held a mass by the Romanian Patriarch,
having at his side Pope John Paul II, in his first visit to a majority
Christian Orthodox country. I can’t remember too much of that day, but I have
in my heart the joy of meeting one special man, for which I am grateful. It was
the only time I saw him live, as my first visit to Rome and thus Vatican was
only in 2007 (exactly on my birthday, but that’s another story). I was, from my
TV, with those gathered in Saint Peter Square in the spring of 2005, to pray
for him and again I was impressed by the love he was surrounded with, which was
undoubtedly a response to the love he gave. Since then, I saw videos,
documentaries, movies, I read books and articles (right now I am reading his
biography, Witness to Hope, written by George Weigel) and the more I know about
him, the more I am convinced that he was indeed a special man, beyond the
boundaries of his faith and religion.
Although I am not a Catholic,
I am very happy that this Sunday, April 27th, Pope John Paul II will
be recognized as saint. I wanted so much to be there, in Saint Peter Square,
among all the pilgrims from all over the world, most definitely not only Catholics.
I couldn’t go, but I will watch all the ceremony on TV. Besides, I decided to
try, this week, some polish desserts, among them the famous kremówka papieska (kreh-MOOV-kah
pah-PYESS-kah),
known as the favorite dessert of the late Pope. This way I’ll be able to
compare them with the originals from Poland, my next holiday destination.
Last night I made
Sernik, a Polish cheesecake, and I can’t wait to take a bite. For the others, I’ll
wait for the weekend to come. I will share with you the recipes and my
impressions!
